About Forsyth Singers

Our Mission

The purpose of The Forsyth Singers is to establish and maintain a tradition of choral excellence, bringing fine performances of secular and sacred music to our community and surrounding communities.

Our History

Founded in 2006 by Van McCollum, Forsyth Singers was originally called the Cumming Playhouse Singers.  We are an auditioned group of singers, including people ages 16 to 80+. We are supported through membership dues, ticket sales, and donations from members and local businesses.  We hope you will support us by singing with us or attending our performances.

Our Director ~ Dr. John Broman

Dr. John M. Broman received music degrees from the University of Iowa (B.M. in voice, 1974; M.A. in choral conducting, 1976; D.M.A. in choral conducting, 1986) where his primary instructors were Don Moses (conducting), Richard Bloesch (choral literature) and Kathryn Harvey (voice).  His collegiate teaching experience includes stints at Dakota Wesleyan University, Mitchell, SD (1976-77), Loras College, Dubuque, IA (1977-92), and the University of North Georgia, Dahlonega GA (1992-2024). During his thirty-two years at the University of North Georgia, Dr. Broman received many awards for teaching, the most noteworthy being the 2019 Weston H. Noble award “in recognition of outstanding achievement in the field of vocal music.” Upon Dr. Broman’s retirement, the UNG Department of Music Leadership Award was renamed “The John M. Broman Leadership Award.” While at the University of North Georgia, his group Le Belle Voci was invited to perform for GMEA’s In-Service Conference in 2006 and 2016, and for the Fall Conference of the GA ACDA in 2021. In addition, Dr. Broman averaged 35-40 presentations per year, performing for over 600,000 people in the process.  He provided music for 130 commencements, organized and directed annual Church Choir Festivals and Choral Explosions, and took 15 tours (6 overseas) with his university choirs.

Our Accompanist ~ Susan Ray

SUSAN J. MCEWEN RAY received her B.A. in Music Education from Shorter University (piano: William Knight, voice: Phoebe Pomeroy, and organ: David Beatty), and her Ed.S. and M.Mus. from Georgia State University, where she studied piano with Dr. Carey Lewis and organ with Sarah Leathers Martin. She taught in Clayton and Fulton County Schools before moving to Georgia State University’s Perimeter College music faculty, where she was the Coordinator of Music. She taught music theory, ear training, piano and organ, and was the conductor of all GPC choral groups. Ms. McEwen Ray was also the Music Director for multiple music theatre productions. She was a contributing faculty vendor at Georgia Tech (instructor of piano). She served as State Theory Chair for GMTA (Collegiate Piano Chair) and lectured/performed for the Dekalb Symphony Orchestra. Ms. McEwen Ray continues to function as pianist, organist, or director for several churches in Metro Atlanta and Forsyth County. She has been featured on WABE’s program Atlanta Music Scene as a collaborative pianist and has been recognized for teaching excellence and service at GSU/PC by being the recipient of various awards, including the GPC New Faculty Award, a national NISOD Excellence Award, and the Cole Fellow, GSU/PC’s highest award for teaching.
